Why a Viking Oven Igniter Glows and the Gas Never Arrives

An oven that will not heat is easy to describe and easy to misdiagnose. You turn the dial, something inside the cavity starts to glow bright orange, you can smell nothing, and after a few minutes the oven is exactly as cold as it was when you started. Every instinct says the part that lights up is working, so the fault must be somewhere else — the valve, the board, the thermostat, the whole appliance.

It is almost always the part that lights up.

What the igniter is actually doing

A hot-surface igniter on a gas oven is not a spark and it is not a pilot. It is a silicon carbide or silicon nitride element wired in series with the safety valve, and that series wiring is the whole story. The current that flows through the igniter on its way to the valve is what pulls the valve open. The glow is a side effect — a useful one, because it is also what lights the gas once it arrives, but a side effect all the same.

So the sequence in a working oven goes: call for heat, current flows through the igniter, igniter heats up, current rises to the point where the valve’s bimetal opens, gas arrives at a burner tube that is already at ignition temperature, and it lights immediately. The whole thing takes something like thirty to sixty seconds from cold.

Now age the igniter. These elements do not fail cleanly; they drift. Resistance climbs over years of thermal cycling, and as resistance climbs, current falls. There is a window — often a long one, sometimes a year or more — where the element still draws enough current to glow beautifully but not enough to hold that valve open. From the kitchen it looks identical to a healthy oven that is simply refusing to light.

The number that decides it

This is a measurement, not a judgement. A clamp meter goes around one leg of the igniter circuit and reads the current draw while the oven is calling for heat.

Manufacturers publish the figure for the specific element, and it varies by type, but the shape of the answer is always the same: there is a current above which the valve opens and below which it does not, and the igniter either reaches it or it does not. A reading half a tenth of an amp under specification is not a marginal pass. The valve is a mechanical device with a defined pull-in current, and it has no opinion about how close you were.

The reason this matters so much is what happens when nobody takes the reading. Without it, the visible evidence points at the valve — the igniter glows, the gas does not come, so the thing that meters the gas must be broken. The valve gets replaced, the old weak igniter is put back in front of it, and the oven does exactly what it did before. That is one of the few genuinely avoidable second visits in this trade, and it is avoidable with a meter and two minutes.

What it looks like from the kitchen

Before anybody opens anything, the symptom pattern usually tells you which way this is going to go:

  • Slow, then slower, then nothing. Preheat that used to take a few minutes has been creeping up for weeks or months. This is the classic drifting-igniter timeline, and it is the one that ends with a cold oven.
  • Works when it feels like it. Lights on a second or third attempt, or lights fine in the morning and refuses in the evening. Marginal current plus a warm appliance — the element’s resistance is temperature-dependent, so a hot restart behaves differently from a cold one.
  • Glows, never lights, every time. Fully drifted. There is no ambiguity left in it.
  • No glow at all. Different fault entirely: an open igniter, a broken circuit, a failed control relay or no power to that circuit. The meter still settles it, but you are now looking for a break rather than a weak part.

The middle two are the ones worth acting on early. An oven that is being temperamental in July is an oven that will be cold in November, and there is no version of this fault that improves on its own.

What you can check before calling anyone

None of this requires taking a panel off:

  1. Time the preheat from stone cold. Write the number down. If it has doubled since you moved in, you have your answer already.
  2. Watch through the vent or the door for the glow. Glow with no light-off is the pattern above. No glow at all sends the diagnosis somewhere else.
  3. Check the other gas appliances in the kitchen. If the cooktop burners are also weak or slow to light, the problem may be upstream of the oven altogether — a supply issue, not an appliance one.
  4. Check the door. An oven that heats but under-performs is a different complaint from an oven that never lights, and a door that no longer seals will produce the first one.
  5. Cancel any lockout. A control that has locked out after a self-clean cycle will not fire the igniter at all, and that clears differently.

If the oven glows and stays cold after all of that, the visit is a measurement and a part, and it is worth booking before you plan anything around the oven.

When it is not the igniter

It is worth being honest about the other outcomes, because they exist:

  • A genuinely failed safety valve. Rare, but real, and the meter is what distinguishes it — full rated current at the igniter and still no gas is a valve.
  • A control or relay that is not energising the circuit. No glow, no current, nothing to measure at the element.
  • A wiring or connector failure. Heat cycles work on terminals near a burner box, and a burnt connector at the igniter is common enough to be worth looking for before condemning anything expensive.
  • A gas supply problem. Low pressure at the appliance will affect everything it feeds, not just the oven, which is why supply pressure gets read on any call where more than one burner is behaving oddly.

Every one of those is separated from a tired igniter by readings taken in the first ten minutes of a visit. What none of them is separated by is looking at the glow and forming an impression — which is exactly what the appliance is inviting you to do.

If the igniter glows, doesn't that prove it works?
No, and this is the single most expensive misunderstanding in gas oven repair. The igniter is wired in series with the safety valve, and it is the current flowing through it that pulls that valve open. As the element ages its resistance climbs, so it draws less current — but it still glows. You end up with an igniter that looks perfect and a valve that never opens.
How long should the oven take to light from cold?
Roughly thirty to sixty seconds on a healthy hot-surface system. If yours has crept up to ninety seconds or more over the last few months, that is the classic warning that the element is on its way out, even though the oven is still working.
Can I replace a glow igniter myself?
It is a gas appliance, and getting to the igniter means going past the burner tube and the safety valve. If you are comfortable isolating the gas and the power and you know what you are looking at, the part itself is a two-screw job. If any of that sentence is unfamiliar, it is not the appliance to learn on.
The oven lights but the broiler doesn't. Same fault?
Usually the same kind of fault in a different place. Bake and broil have their own igniters, and they age separately because they get very different use. A broiler igniter that has been asked to work twice a year for a decade can be perfectly healthy while the bake element is finished.
